Birka började tyna bort redan omkring 950-talet.

Historiebloggen: The Ruthenian Catholic Churches

The motherland of Ruthenian Catholics is now in extreme western Ukraine southwest of the Carpathian mountains. The area was known variously in the past as Carpatho-Ukraine, Carpatho-Ruthenia, Carpatho-Rus, Subcarpathia, and now as Transcarpathia. Although the ecclesiastical term “Ruthenian” was formerly used more broadly to include Ukrainians, Belarusans and Slovaks as well, it is now used by church authorities in a narrower sense to denote this specific Greek Catholic Church. In terms of ethnicity, Ruthenian Catholics prefer to be called Rusyns. They are closely related to the Ukrainians and speak a dialect of the same language. The traditional Rusyn homeland extends beyond Transcarpathia into northeast Slovakia and the Lemko region of extreme southeast Poland.

In the late 9th century, most of this area came under the control of Catholic Hungary, which much later promoted Catholic missionary work among its Orthodox population, including the Rusyns. This activity culminated in the reception of 63 of their priests into the Catholic Church on April 24, 1646, at the town of Užhorod. The Union of Užhorod affected the Orthodox population of an area which roughly corresponds to today’s eastern Slovakia. In 1664 a union took place at Mukačevo which involved the Orthodox in today’s Transcarpathia in Ukraine and the Hungarian diocese of Hajdúdorog. A third union, which affected the Orthodox in today’s county of Maramures in Romania to the east of Mukačevo, took place in about 1713. Thus within 100 years after the 1646 Union of Užhorod, the Orthodox Church virtually ceased to exist in the region.

Early on there were jurisdictional conflicts over who would control the Ruthenian Catholic Church in this area. In spite of the desire of the Ruthenian Catholics to have their own ecclesiastical organization, for more than a century the Ruthenian bishop of Mukačevo was only the ritual vicar of the Latin bishop of Eger, and Ruthenian priests served as assistants in Latin parishes. The dispute was resolved in 1771 by Pope Clement XIV who, at the request of Empress Maria-Theresa, erected the Ruthenian eparchy of Mukačevo and made it a suffragan of the Primate of Hungary. A seminary for Ruthenian Catholics was set up at Užhorod in 1778.

After World War I, Transcarpathia became part of the new republic of Czechoslovakia. There were Byzantine Catholic dioceses at Mukačevo and Prešov. Although in the 1920s a group of these Ruthenian Catholics returned to the Orthodox Church [see Orthodox Church in the Czech and Slovak Republics], Rusyn ethnic identity remained closely tied to the Ruthenian Catholic Church.

At the end of World War II, Transcarpathia, including Užhorod and Mukačevo, was annexed to the Soviet Union as part of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic. Prešov, however, remained in Czechoslovakia [see Slovak Catholic Church]. The Soviet authorities soon initiated a vicious persecution of the Ruthenian Church in the newly acquired region. In 1946 the Užhorod seminary was closed, and in 1947 Bishop Theodore Romža of Mukačevo was poisoned by the communist authorities. In 1949 the Ruthenian Catholic Church was officially integrated into the Russian Orthodox Church. Rusyns on the other side of the Czechoslovak border were also forced to become Orthodox, while those in the Polish Lemko region were deported en masse in 1947 either to the Soviet Union or other parts of Poland. In all three countries, an attempt was made to wipe out any residual Rusyn national identity by declaring them all to be Orthodox and Ukrainian.

The collapse of communism throughout the region had a dramatic effect on Ruthenian Catholics. The first changes took place in Poland in the mid-1980s, where Lemko organizations began to surface and press for recognition of their rights and distinct status. In Czechoslovakia, the much-diminished Rusyn minority began in November 1989 to press for recognition within the predominantly Slovak Greek Catholic diocese of Prešov. And finally, in the Transcarpathian heartland, on January 16, 1991, the Holy See confirmed a bishop and two auxiliaries that had been functioning underground for the Ruthenian Catholic eparchy of Mukačevo. By 2006 the eparchy had 370 parishes served by 217 priests. Soon after the end of communist rule, the diocese was able to establish the Theodore Romža Theological Academy in Užhorod for the formation of clergy and laity.

A continuing issue for Ruthenian Catholics has been their relationship with the much larger Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. For the first time ever, the Mukačevo diocese finds itself functioning freely in the same country with the Ukrainian Catholic Church. Although it is not officially a part of the Ukrainian church and is still immediately subject to the Holy See, its bishops have attended recent Ukrainian Greek Catholic synods. The bishop of Mukačevo has made it clear, however, that he opposes integration into the Ukrainian Catholic Church and favors the promotion of the distinct ethnic and religious identity of his Rusyn people. This identity received a boost in March 2007 when the Transcarpathian Oblast Council voted to recognize the Rusyn people as an indigenous nationality of the region. As a result, the local government will be required to provide funding to promote Rusyn language, culture, and education.

In 1996 Pope John Paul II established an Apostolic Exarchate for Catholics of the Byzantine rite in the Czech Republic and appointed Fr. Ivan Ljavinec, until then the syncellus of the Prešov Slovak Catholic diocese, as its first bishop. One reason for the establishment of this jurisdiction – which was officially classified as belonging to the Ruthenian rite – was to regularize the situation of married Latin priests secretly ordained in Czechoslovakia under communist rule. Sixty of these priests had been accepted by the church but had been allowed to minister only as permanent deacons in the Latin rite because of their marriages. In 1997, 18 of these men were re-ordained Greek Catholic priests by Bishop Ljavinec. There are about 178,000 Greek Catholics in the Czech Republic.

Many Ruthenian Catholics immigrated to North America in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Because of strained relations with the Latin hierarchy and the imposition of clerical celibacy on the Eastern Catholic clergy in the United States in 1929, large numbers of these Catholics returned to the Orthodox Church. In 1982 it was estimated that out of 690,000 people of Rusyn descent in the United States, 225,000 were still Ruthenian Catholics, 95,000 belonged to the Carpatho-Ruthenian Orthodox diocese, 250,000 were in the Orthodox Church in America, 20,000 were in Orthodox parishes directly under the Moscow Patriarchate, and 100,000 belonged to various other Orthodox, Ukrainian Catholic, Roman Catholic, and Protestant denominations.

In the United States today, the Ruthenians constitute a separate ecclesiastical structure with four dioceses, 222 parishes, 231 priests, 50 permanent deacons, and about 100,000 faithful. It is headed by Most Reverend William Charles Skurla (born 1956, appointed 2012), Metropolitan Archbishop of Pittsburgh (66 Riverview Avenue, Pittsburg, PA 15214). The official website of the Archeparchy is http://www.archeparchy.org/. This church, generally known simply as Byzantine Catholic, emphasizes its American character, and celebrates liturgy in English in most parishes. Candidates for the priesthood are trained at Sts. Cyril and Methodius Seminary in Pittsburgh. In 1999 the Vatican approved a new particular law for the Ruthenian Metropolitanate which allowed for the ordination to the priesthood of married men who had received a proper dispensation from the Holy See.

In other areas of the diaspora, including Australia, Great Britain, and Canada, Ruthenian Catholics are not distinguished from Ukrainian Catholics.

In sum, today there are three distinct Ruthenian Catholic jurisdictions: (1) the Ruthenian Byzantine Catholic Metropolitanate in the United States, a metropolitan church sui iuris, (2) the eparchy of Mukačevo in Ukraine, which is immediately subject to the Holy See, and (3) the Apostolic Exarchate in the Czech Republic. The relationship between the three has not been clarified. The bishop of Mukačevo is listed below as head of the church, but he has no authority over the other two jurisdictions. The membership figure includes the combined statistics for all three entities.

Location: Ukraine, United States, Czech Republic
Head: Bishop Milan Šašík (born 1952, appointed 2010)
Title: Bishop of Mukačevo of the Byzantines
Residence: Užhorod, Ukraine
Membership: 598,000

Historiebloggen: How Moscow hijacked the history of Kyivan Rus’

Historiebloggen: Moscow hikacked Kyivanrus

This essay was first published in a collection by Yaroslav Dashkevych, PhD. in “Learn to Speak the Truth with Non-Lying Lips” – K:Tempora, 2011, 828pp. Yaroslav Dashkevych was a prominent Ukrainian historian, who during his long academic career wrote more than 950 works on Ukrainian historiography, source studies and special historical disciplines, Eastern Studies, Ukrainian-Armenian, Ukrainian-Turkish, and Ukrainian-Jewish relations.

In creating their nation, Ukrainians need to examine and analyze their own history, based on truth, verified facts and historical events. For centuries under the rule of conquerors, Ukrainians were basically deprived of the opportunity to influence the formation of national awareness and the development of their history, with the result that Ukraine’s history was composed predominantly to the advantage of their conquerors. Especially troublesome is the question of the pretensions and demands of Moscow, and later Russia, concerning the historical legacy of Kyivan Rus.

In his historical work “The Land of Moksel or Moskovia” (Olena Teliha Publishing House, Kyiv 2008, 2009, 3 vol.) V. Bilinsky presents historical sources (predominantly Russian) which testify to the total misrepresentation of the history of the Russian Empire, which was geared to create a historical mythology about Moscow and Kyivan Rus sharing common common historical roots, and that Moscow possesses “succession rights” to Kyivan Rus.

Moscow’s outright fraud that appropriated the past of the Great Kyiv kingdom and its people dealt a severe blow to the Ukrainian ethos. Our obligation now is to utilize hard facts to uncover the lies and amorality of Moskovian mythology.

Let’s examine these problems.

The tsars of Moscow and, later, Russia understood that without an imposing past it was impossible to create a great nation and empire. Therefore it was necessary to glorify their historical roots and even to hijack the history of other nations. So, starting with Ivan the Terrible (1533-1584) the tsars of Moscow applied all their efforts to appropriate the history of Kyivan Rus, its glorious past, and to create an official mythology for the Russian Empire.

This might have been less consequential if their mythology had not affected the central concerns of Ukraine and if it had not aimed at the utter destruction of Ukraine: its history, language and culture. Over time, it became clear that Russian Imperial chauvinists did and continue to do everything possible to realize this aim.

Over hundreds of years and especially starting with the early XVI century, they brainwashed and continue to brainwash everyone, saying that the origins of the Russian nation and people are the Great Kyivan kingdom. They assert that Kyivan Rus was the cradle of three sibling nations – Russians, Ukrainians and Belarus; and that because the Russians are “older brothers”, they have the right to the legacy of Kyivan Rus. To this day, Russian historians and officials make use of this woeful lie, which is repeated by the ‘fifth column’ of communists and almost all Party of Regions deputies in our Parliament.

Here are the facts:

  • At the time of the Kyivan Empire there was no mention of a Moscow nation. It is well known that Moscow was created in 1277 as a subservient vassal region or ‘ulus’ to the Golden Horde, established by the Khan Mengu-Timur. By that time, Kyivan Rus had existed for more than 300 years.
  • There are no indications of any connection of Kyivan Rus with the Finnish ethnic groups in the land of ‘Moksel’ or later of the Moscow principality with the Principality of Kyivan Rus up until the XVI century. At the time when Kyivan Rus had officially accepted Christianity, the Finn tribes in ‘Moksel’ lived in a semi-primitive state.

How can anyone speak of ‘an older brother’ when that ‘older brother’ did not first appear until centuries after Rus-Ukrainians? He has no moral right to call himself an ‘older brother’, nor to dictate how people are to live, nor to force his culture, language, and world views. It is clear that until the end of the XV century, there was no Russian nation, there was no older brother ‘Great Russian’, nor were there any Russian people. Instead, there was the land of Suzdal: the land of Moksel, later the Moscow princedom, which entered into the role of the Golden Horde, the nation of Genghis Khan. From the end of the XIII to the beginning of the XVIII century, the people in this land were called Moskovites. And Moscow historians are silent about this question of their national origins.

Moskovites, ‘Great Russians’ – who are they?

During the IX to the XII cent. the large area of Tula, Riazan, and today’s Moscow region, including the tribes of Mer, Ves, Moksha, Chud, Mari and others – all this was inhabited by the people called ‘Moksel’. These tribes eventually became the foundation of the nation who now call themselves ‘Great Russians’.

In 1137, the younger son of the Kyivan prince Monomakh, Yuri Dolgoruky (who had been left without a princedom in the Kyivan empire) arrived in this land.

Yuri Dolgoruky began the rule of the ‘Riurykovyches’ in ‘Moksel’, becoming prince of Suzdal. To him and a local Finnish woman was born a son Andrey, called ‘Bogoliubsky’. Born and raised in the forest wilderness among the half savage Finnish tribes, prince Andrey cut all ties with his father’s entourage and with their old Kyivan customs.

Historiebloggen: your-dolgorulkiy

In 1169 Andrey Bogoliubsky sacked and destroyed Kyiv. He destroyed all the churches and religious artifacts, something unheard of in those times.

Historiebloggen: andrei-bogolubskiy
Andrey Bogoliubsky
Andrey was a barbarian who did not feel any familial ties with Kyiv, the holy city of Slavs.

Within a brief time (50-80 years) every Finnish tribe was imposed with a prince of the Riurykovyches, whose mother was either a woman of Mer, Murom or Kokshan… Thus appeared the ‘Moksel’ princedoms: Vladimir, Riazan, Tver, and others. At this time, some missionaries appeared in the land of Moksel to spread Christianity. It is impossible to consider a mass ‘migration’ of Slavs from the Dnipro river region, as Russian historians insist. Why should the Slavs leave behind their fertile Dnipro lands and relocate more than a thousand kilometers through impassable undergrowth and swamps into an unknown semi-savage land?

Under the influence of Christianity, the land of ‘Moksel’ started to form their language, which in time became Russian. Up until the XII century, only Finn tribes lived in the land of ‘Moksel’. The archaeological findings of O.S. Uvarova (Meria and their everyday life from kurhan excavations, 1872 – p. 215) support this. Out of 7729  excavated kurhans, not a single Slavic burial was discovered.

And the anthropological investigations of human skulls by A. P. Bohdanov and F. K. Vovk support the differentiated characteristics of the Finnish and Slavic ethnoses.

Moscow’s subservience to the Khan

In 1237 the Tatar-Mongols entered the lands of Suzdal. All who bowed, kissed the boots of the Khan and accepted subservience remained alive and unharmed, all others who did not submit were destroyed.

The princes of Vladimir, Yury and Yaroslav Vsevolodovich accepted subservience to Khan Batey. In this manner, the land of ‘Moksel’ entered the ranks of the Golden Horde Empire of Genghis Khan, and its fighting forces were combined with the army of the Empire. The commander of the Moksel division within Batey’s army was Yury Vsevolodovich, the prince of the city of Vladimir. In 1238, Finnish tribe divisions were formed and marched together under Batey in his invasions of Europe in 1240-1242. This is direct evidence of the establishment of the rule of the Khan in the lands of Rostov-Suzdal.

While Yuri Vsevolodovich was away taking part in Batey’s European invasion, his younger brother Yaroslav Vsevolodovich was placed at the head of the Vladimir princedom. Yaroslav left his eight year old son Alexander Yaroslavich as hostage with the Khan.

Historiebloggen: alexander-nevskiy
Alexander “Nevsky” blood brother with Khan Sartak of the Golden Horde

Living with the Horde of Batey from 1238 to 1252 Alexander, only much later named ‘Nevsky’, adopted all the customs and organizational ideas of the Golden Horde. He became a blood brother of Sartak, the son of the Khan, married the Khan’s daughter, and eventually became a loyal vassal of the Golden Horde and prince of Vladimir from 1252 to 1263. He never took part in any significant battles – all the ‘victories’ of Alexander Nevsky are transparent lies. Prince Alexander simply could never had taken part in the battles on the Neva in 1240 and on Chud or Peipus Lake in 1242 (fantasized in Eisenstein’s film) because he was still a child.

It is important to mention that the ruling powers of the local princes of Rostov-Suzdal were minimal. Khan Batey installed his own administrators in all the “ulus” princedoms: on top was the Great Baskak, and under him were the regional administrative baskaks. These were full-fledged rulers from the Golden Horde, who followed the laws of the Genghis Khans. Russian historians are lying when they state that the princes of Suzdal, and later Moscow, were independent from the Golden Horde. The Khan’s covenant named the primary rulers of the princedoms his baskak, or ‘daruha’, while the local princes were relegated to second and even third place importance.

The big lie was introduced: that Moscow was founded in 1147 by Yuri Dolgoruky. This is a myth with no supportive evidence. Moscow was established as a settlement in 1272. That same year the Golden Horde conducted their third census of the populations in their domain. Both in the first census (1237-1238) and in the second census (1254-1259) there is no mention of any Moscow at all.

Moscow appeared as a princedom in 1277 at the decree of the Tatar-Mongol Khan Mengu-Timur and it was an ordinary ‘ulus’ (subdivision) of the Golden Horde. The first Moscow prince was Daniel (1277-1303), younger son of Alexander, so-called ‘Nevsky’. The Riurykovich dynasty of Moscow princes starts from him. In 1319 Khan Uzbek (as stated in the afore-mentioned work by Bilinsky) named his brother Kulkhan the virtual Prince of Moscow, and in 1328 the Great Prince of Moscow. Khan Uzbek (named in Russian history as Kalita), after he converted to Islam, destroyed almost all the Riurykovich princes. In 1319-1328 the Riurykovich dynasty was replaced by the Genghis dynasty in the Moscow ‘ulus’ of the Golden Horde. In 1598 this Genghis dynasty in Moscow which began with Prince Ivan Kalita (Kulkhan) was finally broken. Thus for over 270 years, Moscow was ruled solely by the Khans of Genghis.

Still, the new dynasty of the Romanovs (Kobyla) promised to follow former traditions and  solemnly swore allegiance to the age-old dynasty of Genghis.

In 1613 the Moscow Orthodox Church became the stabilizing force to safeguard the sustainment of Tatar-Mongol government in Moscow, offering Masses for the Khan, and issuing anathemas on anyone who opposed this servitude.

Based on these facts, it becomes clear that Moscow is the direct inheritor of the Golden Horde Empire of Genghis and that actually the Tatar-Mongols were the ‘godfathers’ of Moscow statehood. The Moscow princedom (and tsardom from 1547) up until the XVI century had no ties or relationships with the princedoms of the lands of Kyivan Rus.

Great Russians

The tribe of Great Russians, or the Russian people as known today, appeared around the XV to XVII centuries from among the Finn tribes: Muroma, Mer, Ves and others. This was when their history started. There is no history of Great Russians on Kyivan lands! The history of Great Russians starts with the ‘Beyond the Forests Land’ in Moscow, which was never Kyivan Rus. The Tatar-Mongols who entered these lands were a big element in the formulation of ‘Great Russians’. The Great Russsian psychology absorbed many characteristics – the Tatar-Mongol instincts of a conqueror and despot, with the ultimate aim: world domination. Thus by the XVI cent. was established the type of a conqueror who was horrible in his lack of education, rage and cruelty. These people had no use for European culture and literacy. All such things like morality, honesty, shame, justice, human dignity and historical awareness were absolutely foreign to them. A significant amount of Tatar-Mongols entered the makeup of Great Russians from the XIII to XVI centuries and they accounted for the genealogy of over 25% of Russian nobility. Here are some Tatar names that brought fame to the Russian Empire: Arakcheev, Bunin, Derzhavin, Dostoyevsky, Kuprin, Plekhanov, Saltykov-Shchedrin, Turgenev, Sheremetiev, Chadaev and many others.

Historiebloggen: ivan-turgenev
Ivan Turgenev

In order to appropriate the history of Kyiv lands and to immortalize this theft, the Great Russians had to squash the Ukrainian people, drive them into slavery, deprive them of their true name, exterminate them via famine, etc.

Ukrainians had emerged as a nation in the XI to XII centuries, and probably, even earlier. Later they were labeled ‘Little Russians’ when Russians began to brainwash the world with their ‘version’ of history. For the smallest deviation from this official version, people were tortured, killed, and sent off to the GULAG. The Soviet period was especially brutal and vicious. During that time, Ukraine lost over 25 million of her sons and daughters, who perished in wars for Russian interests, and during collectivization, tortures, and forced relocations.

This is the way the ‘older brother’ forced the ‘younger brother’, the ‘Little Russian’, to live in the savage ‘embraces of love’.

Creation of the Historical Myth of the Russian State

Back in the times of the princedom of Vasily III (1505 – 1533) Moscow gave birth to the idea of its greatness, articulated by the representative of Moscow orthodoxy, the monk Filofey: “Two Romes fell, a third still stands, and there will never be a fourth”.

Historiebloggen: filofey-of-moscow
Filofey of Moscow

From there, they created the idea of an all-powerful and ‘God chosen’ Moscow – the ‘third – and final Rome’. These ideas spread and were confirmed throughout Moskovia. And how much blood was spilt by the princes of Moscow, and later the tsars, over this fantasy-myth!

During the reign of Ivan IV (the Terrible) they grasped not only after the inheritance of Kyivan Rus, but now also the Byzantine Empire. Thus, according to accounts, the cap of Monomakh was believed to have been given the Kyivan prince Volodymyr Monomakh by his granddad, the basileus Constantine IX.
Historiebloggen: cap-of-monomakh
Cap of Volodymyr Monomakh
This was considered the symbol of the transfer of power from Byzantium to Kyivan Rus. In addition, Yuri Dolgoruky, the sixth son of Volodymyr Monomakh, was the first prince of Suzdal, so the appearance of this cap in Moscow was a ‘proof’ of the legacy legitimacy of the Moscow rulers not only to the Kyiv Great Throne, but now also to the inheritance of the former Byzantine Empire. Furthermore, Moscow fabricated a deceptive last will of Volodymyr Monomakh about handing over ‘legacy rights’ to his son Yuri Dolgoruky, the conqueror of the so-called ‘Beyond the Forests Land’. This was all fiction. In reality, the cap of Monomakh was a gold ‘bukhar tubeteyka’, which Khan Uzbek presented to Ivan Kalyta (1319-1340) who maintained this cap in order to further his fame. Ivan IV (the Terrible) in 1547 was anointed in the cathedral with the title of ‘Moscow Tsar’ as the ‘inheritor’ of the Greek and Roman emperors. Of the 39 signatures who affirmed this document sent from Constantinople, 35 were forgeries. Thus, Ivan the Terrible became the ‘inheritor of the Byzantine emperors’. Thus, the lie was made official.

Ivan IV, the Terrible

Peter I began the massive falsification of his people’s history. In 1701 he issued a decree to eliminate from all subjugated peoples all their recorded national historical artifacts: ancient chronicles, chronographs, old archives, church documents etc. This was especially directed at Ukraine-Rus.

In 1716, Peter I ‘changed the copy’ of the so-called Königsberg Chronicles to now show the ‘joining’ of the old chronicles of the Kyivan with the Moscow princedoms. The aim was to lay a foundation for the unity of Slavic and Finnish lands. However, both the false ‘copy’ as well as to the original were sealed.

Historiebloggen: peter-i
Peter I, the Great

Peter’s falsification became the basis for further falsifications – the composition of the so-called ‘General Rus Chronicles Collections’ which purported to establish Moscow’s rights to the legacy of Kyivan Rus. On the basis of these falsifications, on October 22, 1721, Moscow proclaimed itself the Russian Empire, and all Moskovites were now to be – Russians. In this manner, they stole from the legitimate inheritors of Kyivan Rus the Ukrainians’ historical name of Rus.

Peter imported from Europe a large number of specialists, including professional historians, who were assigned the rewriting and falsification of the history of the Russian state.

In addition, every foreigner who entered government work, swore an oath not to reveal state secrets and to never betray the Moscow state. The question remains, what government secrets regarding the ‘formation of Russian history’ of ancient times could there be? In any civilized European country, after 30-50 years all archives are opened. The Russian Empire is very afraid about the truth in its past. Deathly afraid!

Following Peter I, who transformed Moscow into the Russian state, the Moscow elite began to consider the necessity of creating a comprehensive history of their own country. Empress Catherine II (1762-1796) intensively took on this task.

Historiebloggen: ekaterina_ii
Catherine II

She could not admit the idea that common Tatar-Mongol elements existed in the dynasty of the Tsars. Catherine was an intelligent and educated European woman and once she had examined the archival sources, she called attention to the fact that all the history of her country was based on oral traditions (‘bilyny’) and had no factual support.

Therefore on December 4, 1783, Catherine II issued a decree, creating a ‘Commision for the Collection and Organization of the Ancient Russian History’ under the leadership and oversight of Graf A. P. Shuvalov, with a staff of 10 renowned historians. The principal task before this commission was to ‘find’ new chronicles, rewrite others, and create new collections of archives and other similar falsifications. The aim was to lay the foundations for the ‘legitimacy’ of Moscow’s hijacking of the historical legacy of Kyivan Rus and to create an official historical myth about the origins of the Russian state. This commission labored for ten years. In 1792, ‘Catherine’s History’ saw the light of day. The commission worked in the following manner:

– the gathering of all written documents (archives, chronicles, etc). This effort had partly begun under Peter I. This collection of materials was conducted not only within the Empire, but also from other countries like Poland, Turkey etc.

– the analysis, falsification, rewritings or destruction of historical materials. Thus they rewrote the chronicles: ‘The Tale of Ihor’s Campaign’, ‘Tale of bygone years’, ‘Lavrentiivsky Chronicles’, and many others. Many chronicles were rewritten several times, and the originals either locked up or destroyed. Thus were also locked up: the ‘History of the Scythians’ by A. I. Lyzlov (published in 1776 and 1787), and the ‘Russian History from Ancient Times’ by V. M. Tatishchev (published in 1747). In his ‘Scythian History’ Lyzlov showed that the inhabitants of Moscow were a separate people, who had nothing in common with Kyivan Rus, Lithuania, Poland, etc.

– the writing of new ‘Rus Chronicles Collections’ which were now being composed in the XVIII cent., but purported to be from the XI to the XIV centuries. These collections all propagated the ‘General Rus’ idea. This was in reference to the times when Kyivan lands were inhabited by Slavic tribes (Poliany, Derevliany, Siveriany etc) who were Christians, while the ‘Beyond the Forests Land’ was populated by Finn tribes (Muroma, Mer, Ves, Moksha and others) who lived a semi-primitive existence, and these tribes had nothing historical in common up to the XVI century.

– the new composition of thousands of various collections to establish the ‘unity’ of Kyivan Rus with the Finn tribes. All these chronicles and collections, according to author Bilinsky, exist only in the form of copies, not one original. Not one! All this points to the almost unbelievable in scope and shameless, massive plundering and falsification of the creation of the history of the Russian state.

It is impossible to live a lie forever!

It is time for Ukrainian historians to write the actual true history of Ukraine, which would not be based on the lies of the ‘Catherine Chronicles’, the falsifications and newly written in the XVIII century ‘General Russian Chronicle Collections’, but rather based on historical reality, established in documents, especially those preserved in countries like Poland, Turkey, Greece, Iran and others. People deserve to know the truth.

Historiebloggen: Rutenien or Ruteni

Rutenien or Ruteni in Ptolemy (ii.7.§21) who places them in Gallia Aquitania. Pliny (iv.19) says that Ruteni border on the Narbonensis Provincia; and Strabo (iv. p. 191) places them and the Gabaleis or Gabali next to the Narbonensis. Their country was the old province of Rouergue, which extended from the Cévennes, its eastern boundary, about 90 miles in a western direction. The chief town was Rhodez. The modern department of Aveyron comprehends a large part of the Rouergue. There were silver mines in the country of the Ruteni and their neighbours the Bagali, and the flax of this country was good.

The Arverni and Ruteni were dereated by Q.Fabius Maximus, b.c. 121, but their country was not reduced to the form of a Roman province (Caes. B.G.i.45). In Caesar's time part of the Ruteni were included in the Provincia under the name of Ruteni Provinciales (B.G.vii.5,7). Vercingetorix in b.c.52 sent Lucterius of the Cadurci into the country of the Ruteni to bring them over to the Gallic confederation, which he did. Caesar, in order to protect the Provincia on this side, placed troops in the country of the Ruteni Provinciales, and among the Volcae Arecomici and Tolosates. Pliny, who enumerates the Ruteni among the people of Aquitania, also mentions Ruteni in the Narbonensis (iii.4), but he means the town Segodunum. The Ruteni Provinciales of course were nearer to the Tectosages than the other Ruteni, and we may perhaps place them in that part of the departments of Aveyron and Tarn which is south of the Tarnis (Tarn). It may be conjectured that part of the Ruteni were added to the Provincia, either after the defeat of the Ruteni by Maximus, or after the conquest of Tolosa by Caepio (b.c.106.)

Historiebloggen: Denna dag i Polens historia: 16 september

Tredje boken, kapitel 19
Under hans farfar Mistiwoj hade återfallit i hedendom.

Tredje boken, kapitel 20

Noteringar
Arusiam = Århus. In ulmo insula - på ön Holm. Sembland. Matianus. Frankernas historia.

Abbo of Fleury, Passio Sancti Eadmundi: "Unconquerable king... a terror by land and sea." Ivar the Boneless, a danish pagan of royal pedigree, arrived in England in 865. He probably traveled from Dublin, which had been founded by vikings almost 30 years earlier. Ivar had spent some 10 years going back and fourth from Denmark to Dublin, where he shared the rule of the city with the norwegian  viking Olaf the White.

The character named as Imhar in the authentically contemporary Annals of Ulster equating with Ivar the Boneless. The absence of Imhar from the Annals while Ivar was in England, and the absence of Ivar (Ingware) fron the Chronicle while Imhar was in Scotland and Ireland make this correlation reasonable.

English historian Roger of Wendover. In Strathclyde, Ivar enslaved hundreds. Ivar ascended the throne of Dublin in 871.

The viking tongue, known as Old Norse.

The eddas provide a window onto the mind-set and beliefs of the vikings. The evil frost giant Ymir, and the cow Audumla, on whose milk the giant fed. From Ymir was spawned a race of giants. Nine worlds in which lived the nine races of mortals, immortals and monsters. Two races of the gods: the Aesir, who were the martial gods, and the Vanir, who were the fertility gods. Hall of Salin Warriors, Valhalla. Ragnarok, the norse apocalypse. Midgard, or Middle Earth. Midgard serpent Jormungand.

In the lowest tier was Hel and Niflheim, the frozen realm of the dead, which was stalked by the fearsome dragon Nidhogg, the Corpse Tearer. Somewhere to the south of Hel was Muspell, a region of flame guarded by the giant Surt.

Two bridges connected the nine worlds. Flaming bridge Bifrost, where the god Heimdall stood. Echoing bridge Gjallarbru, watched over by the giantess Modgud. The great ash tree Yggdrasil, tree of life that unified the cosmos. and also allowed access to a higher knowledge. In what could well be the mythologized representation of a shamanic rite. It was on Yggdrasil that the chief of the gods Odin hung for 9 days and nights in order to attain much of his magical power. The name Yggdrasil recalls this event and means "Odin's horse". Round the base of the tree sat the Norns, three mysterious women who wove the fates of gods and men.

In the first era of the cosmos, the two races of the gods, the Aesir and the Vanir, were at war with each other, but soon after the indestructible matriarch of the Vanir was received into the company of the Aesir, the two sides were united.

The great fortress Asgard. Odin's twelve warrior maidens, the Valkyries.

It was viking armies led by generals from royal households who went into battle under Odin's raven banner.

Thor, Frey and his sister Freyja, and Loki. Thor's character was clearly a hyperbole of male strength and vertility. It was Thor who was the scourge of the giants and the tribe of rapacious female monsters, the trolls. Thor's hammer Mjollnir was the favorite among viking foot soldiers, farmers and ordinary folk. Loki was of mized giant and Aesir parentage. The apocalyptic wolf Fenrir. Odin's favorite son Baldur. Loki's wife Sif.

Norse mythology was typically violent, often lewd and sexualized. Its eschatology - doom laden. The central drama was the conflict between the gods and the giants. The masterbuilder Tale. The gods' stronghold Asgard. Loki's true identity as a rock giant.

Poetic Edda is an unambiguous cycle of myths, with an orthodoxy of events.

Sayings of the High One (Havamal).

33
Thietmar of Merseberg, a german writer in 1016, some 50 years after the conversion of Denmark, reported that at Lejre in Sjaelland, major cultic ceremonies had also taken place every 9 years.

The creation of the world from the body of the frost giant Ymir and the death of the beloved god Baldur were both calendar events for blood offerings. Blot, a blood offering. The bones split in order to take auguries known as Hlaut.

50
Annals of Ulster record of 918: Ragnall king of the Danes and the two jarls Oitir and Gragabai... Gothfrith grandson of Imhar....

Berserk Vikings were clearly psycopaths. Haklang, the berserk leader was killed.

Harald Bluetooth sponsored viking brotherhood known as the Jomsvikings, who had 300 longships at their disposal at a secret stone fortress in the Baltic, although no evidence has been found to support this claim.

A monk from the monastery of St. Omer in Flanders wrote a report. Roman commentator reports northern germanic raiders using sail as early as the late 5th century.

The cargo ship Knörr. The viking longship Karve.

Heimskr in Old Norse language, translates literally as "homish" but actually signifies "idiot".

64
In 789, in the southern english town of Dorchester, at Portland, was first viking attack. Mercian king Offa. One priceless treasure that the vikings in their ignorance would scarcely have appreciated - the beautifully illuminated Lindisfarne Bible.

England's population at that time was probably little more than a million.

Scandinavian traders had for decades been active in Northumbria. Scotland was raided in 795, 802 and 806.

82
Almost 40% of the names of towns and villages that were once in the viking kingdom of York contains elements from the Old Norse language, most evidently in the place-name endings of -by and -thorpe, which indicated the quality of the land.

106
Carolingian Empire, which in modern terms encompassed Germany, Slovenia, parts of northern Spain, Austria, Switzerland, much of Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium and France. Even the Orthodox Church of the Byzantine Empire acknowledged Carlemagne's singular authority in the west.

The leader Widukind escaped the butchery of the River Weser. Widukind's response was to flee north and seek refuge among the Danes.

Aachen, Carlemagne's capital south of the Rhine.

The chief sponsor of viking raiders from Denmark during the late 830s and the 840s was King Horik, who quickly perceived the opportunities that were opening up in Francia. Horik had seriously upset the Franks by protecting the deposed Harald Klak, who had allied himself first to Louis the Pious and then to Lothar and had then turned renegade and sacked the royal mint at Dorestad on the Rhine.

According to the contemporary Annals of St.-Bertin, in 845 Horik sent 600 longships down the Elbe with the intention of invading the East Frankish kingdom, but he was turned back by a saxon army loyal to king Louis the German. Not wanting to go home empty-handed, Horik stopped off at Hamburg, and attacked the great ecclesiastical center. Among them was the revered missionary to the pagan north, Anskar/Ansgar. After this, Horik returned to Denmark, but 120 of his longships, captained by certain Ragnar sailed into the River Seine and descended on Paris.

Back in Denmark, Ragnar reported to Horik that the land was rich and fertile and the people cowardly (Abbey of St. Germain).

112
The historian Ibn Kutia recorded what happened next: ...host of 16,000 Madjus was marching on Moron. When the Madjus saw the moslem army...

A temporary accord between the Frankish bothers led to a concerted effort to protect the northern territories from the likes of King Horik, who had apparently recovered from his superstitious misgivings.

Their island encampment at Oissel, near Rouen. Commanding the assault was Bjorn Ironside. Viking leader called Weland.

Ermentarius recorded situation.

Danish brigand Hastein.

French historian Dudo of St.-Quentin conjured the essence of Hatein's reputation in classical hyporbole.

In the spring of 859, Hastein and Bjorn set sail with 62 longships.

Arab historian Ibn Adhari: "they took many prisoners, stole lot of money and made themselves master of the city where they settled".

127
The founding of Rus. In 859 according to Primary Chronicle, vikings advenced down the rivers of Eastern Europe. A year later, the Slavs rebelled and Rus were driven back "beyond the sea" (VART?).

In 862 three brothers came according to Primary Chronicle.

Aggressive viking movement east across the Baltic Sea can be traced  in obscure legends dating from the 7th century, but it was merchants and craftsmen during the 8th century that vikings began permanent and peaceful settlement at bases such as Grobin and Elbing on the Baltic's southeastern shores.

As early as 839, for the Annals of St.-Bertin record that the Byzantine Emperor had arranged for a party them (ruthenians-ukrainians) to safely escorted to Francia via the Mediterranean Sea.

Vikings were too fearful of the Slavs.

The next recorded visit to Constantinople was some 20 years later. Askold and Dir sailed on june 18 860 with fleet of 200 ships to the Black Sea.

Photius sermonized: a nation among slaves, leaderless...

News of Askold and Dir's wealth and prominence as rulers in Kyiv soon reached Novgorod. Tensions were bound to have resulted, for two distinct Rus factions were now intent on controlling the same river passages. Oleg who succeeded Rurik in Novgorod (HUR?) in 879, took the view that there should only be one. From this point onward, Rus power was centered at Kyiv.

Much depended on keeping the Slavs in check, harvesting their trade goods, and taxing their wealth.

The greeks supported Pechenegs as bulwarks against their enemies. To gain the cooperation of the pechenegs, Oleg again needed the cooperation of the greeks. Oleg died in 914. Oleg said to have been "at peace with all nations".

Arabs, whose only experience of the Rus thus far had been as peaceful traders (BEFORE 912). Year 912, Oleg was simultaneously engaged in forming an alliance with the Khazars who controlled the wide territory between the Balck and Caspian seas. No trader could pass through their lands without paying tax.

Finding the muslim lands south of the Caspian virtually undefended, the Rus ran amok. The towns of Abusgan and Ardebil, were burned to the ground.

Oleg's ward, Igor, succeeded him and was forced to spend the first 5 years of his rule suppresing Slav uprisings in the northwest of his realm and leading a campign against the ever-troublesome pechenegs in the south.

Byzantine Empire attacked by Bulgars in the 920s, by the Magyars in the early 930s. In 941, Igor decided to rectify the situation by waging war on Byzantium (Constantinople). Igor's first attack been forewarned by the Bulgars. The Byzantine diplomat Liudprand of Cremona witnessed the event.

3 years later Igor tried again., this time with viking mercenaries from Sweden and the Pechenegs, among others from the Slavic tribes. Gifts of gold and silk were sent from the emperor, and Igor's army stood down. Igor's coalition partners of Slavs and Swedish mercenaries, they either returned to their homelands or went west to relieve their pent up energies by harrying the Bulgars. Igor suggested they go east. They entered the caspian sea and sailed inland up the river Kura on its west coast toward the town of Berda.

Most of them were poisoned there. Rest of them were butchered by the arab leader Marzuban ibn Muhammed. The consequences of what the vikings had done in Berda were soon felt in Kyiv, for now the Khazars imposed a trade embargo. Igor raised his taxes on the Slavs. It was the Derevlian Slavs who killed Igor in Dereva in 945.

Igor's son and heir, Svyatoslav and mother Olga accepted a Derevlian delegation in Kyiv. The Rus cavalry forced the Derevlians back into their stronghold at Iskorosten, where Igor have been killed. Olga died in 969. She was an archetypal rus queen. She oversaw relations between Kyiv and Novgorod, ensuing the pre-eminence of the Kyiv, and founded numerous new trading posts (VILKA?). In 957 she visited Emperor Constantine Porphyrogenitus. Trade agreements with Byzantium flourished. Olga set marked the beginning of the integration of the Rus, and thus the Slavs into the broader politics of Christian Europe. The Rus (ruthenian-ukrainian) king, Olga's son Svyatoslav hankered after complete domination rather than integration. Svyatoslav's ambitious plan was to extend Rus territory west as far as the Danube. Defenders of the muslim east against any further Rus aggression, were experiencing disunity within their realm, so much so that certain factions approached Svyatoslav for his assistance. Svyatoslav's intention was to establish a new Rus capital at the town of Pereyaslavets on the Dunabe, where he judged that all the riches were concentrated. Within 3 years Svyatoslav trebled the size of Rus. With Svyatoslav and the Rus army absent, the Pechenegs saw their chance and swarmed north and surrounded the walls of Kyiv. Olga and her grandsons were trapped inside. Svyatoslav saved them and prepared for his return to Pereyaslavets. Olga sharply reminded her son where his duty lay - beside her in Kyiv. She had a point, for Novgorod was on the brink to declaring itself independent, as were other major centers across the Rus kingdom. Svyatoslav's suggested remedy was to appoint his 3 sons to act as his regents in his absence, allocating to each of them principalities in Kyiv, Novgorod and Dereva. Only when Olga died 2 years later did Svyatoslav feel free to put his plan into effect and return to Pereyaslavets.

He captured the bulgar royal family in Preslav. Then he ransacked and burned the towns of Adrianopolis and Philippopolis. In the summe of 971, the great emperor John Tzimisces and Svyatoslav finally faced each other across the dusty level plains outside the town of Dristra (modern Silistra) on Dunabe, where the rus had established their headquarters. Fighting alongside the Rus was a vast throng of Slavic mercenaries, even Pechenegs.

Leo the Deacon described rus leader Svyatoslav: he crossed the river in a kind of Scythian boat, he was of medium height, he had bushy brows, blue eyes and was snub-nosed, he shaved his beard but wore a long and bushy moustache, his head was shaven except for a lock of hair on one side as a sign of the nobility of his clan, his neck was thick, his shoulders broad and his whole stature pretty fine, he seemed gloomy and savage, on one of his ears hung a golden earring adorned with two pearls and a ruby set between them, his white garments were not distinguishable from those of his men except for cleanness.

In the spring of 972, Svyatoslav died by Pechenegs. The death of Svyatoslav was in many ways the end of an era. Rus and Greeks became largely reconciled.

A main source of Rus wealth, suddenly dried up in the late 970s when the Arab silver mines ceased to be productive.

143
Volodymyr came to power after 6 years of bloody competition  with his half brothers for the right to succeed Svyatoslav. Volodymyr was a heavy drinker, a human sacrificer who idolized the Slav gods, and a notorious and insatiable womanizer. Volodymyr's long-suffering swedish wife Ragnheid. Consolidation and political acceptance were the achievements of Volodymyr's rule. In 1015, Volodymyr died and turmoil once again broke out over the succession, this time pitting the appointed heir Jaroslav against his usurper brother Svyatopolk. Jaroslav eventually gained the upper hand in 1019, and with it the title of Grand Prince of Rus. Later known as Jaroslav the Wise, he expanded his political alliances. He married Ingigerd (Ingegerd/Ingegärd), the daughter of the swedish king Olof Skötkonung, and their daughter Ellisif went on to marry Harald Hard-Ruler (Ruthless, Hårdrade, Hardråde), the future king of Norway. Harald's half brother, the posthumously sainted Olaf Haraldsson, sought refuge with Jaroslav. Magnus, Olaf's son, remained in Jaroslav's safekeeping until he could return north. Rus was now meshed to both the north and east of Europe politically. Jaroslav was determined to establish the particular cultural character of his kingdom. Religious texts were translated into the slavonic language. He was the enlightened and progressive European ruler.

In 1043 Jaroslav sent his son to the Black sea (WHY? WHO?). First, since the time of Volodymyr, elite viking mercenaries known as varangians had been sent to the greek emperors.
