Dregovichi (dreh-GOH-vee-chee) comes form the old word "dregva", meaning "swamp" or "marsh". Hence the name means "Swamp-dwellers". The are the original inhabitants of Pripiat' marshes. They did also inhabit Podlasia and the name of the capital of that region "Drogichin" come from their name. Along with Krivichi they are the basis of modern Belarusian people.
